Healthy Soap for Healthy Skin
We spend so much time thinking about what we put on our skin.
Serums.
Moisturisers.
Body oils.
Masks.
Exfoliants.
But what about the product we use to cleanse it?
Cleansing is often treated as the most basic step in our skincare routine, something we do quickly before moving on to the products we really care about.
But your cleanser is the first product that comes into contact with your skin every morning and evening.
And what you cleanse with matters.
At The Wilde Magnolia, we believe in Healthy Soap for Healthy Skin because beautiful skincare isn't only about what you add to your skin. It's also about how you treat it when you're taking things away.
Your skin doesn't need to feel "squeaky clean"
We've all experienced it. You step out of the shower and your skin feels tight.
Maybe your legs feel dry. Your hands feel uncomfortable. Your face feels like it needs moisturiser immediately.
We've been taught to associate that squeaky-clean feeling with cleanliness but that feeling means that your skin's natural oils have been stripped away along with the dirt and clean doesn't have to mean stripped.
Your skin has a natural barrier that helps keep moisture in and protects it from the outside environment. A cleanser's job is to remove things such as dirt, sweat, excess oils and other substances from the skin, but ideally without leaving your skin feeling unnecessarily uncomfortable afterwards.
That's why the formulation of your soap matters.
So, what makes handmade cold-process soap different?
Cold-process soap is made by combining oils and butters with an alkali solution and allowing them to undergo a chemical process called saponification.
It sounds simple, but there's a lot of thought behind a good formulation.
The oils and butters are selected in specific proportions to influence the finished bar's cleansing ability, hardness, lather and overall feel.
Unlike a generic soap base, a cold-process soapmaker can formulate the recipe from the beginning meaning every ingredient serves a purpose.
At The Wilde Magnolia, our master soap formula combines olive oil, coconut oil, rice bran oil, castor oil, shea butter and mango butter.
We aren't simply adding beautiful-sounding ingredients to a label. We chose these ingredients and experimented with the formula to create a sophisticated, balanced cleansing bar that nourishes the skin instead of stripping it.
The difference is in the balance
Think of soap formulation a little bit like baking.
You wouldn't expect a cake made from only one ingredient to have the same texture, flavour and structure as one made from carefully balanced ingredients.
Soap is no different.
Olive oil contributes to a mild, creamy-feeling bar. Coconut oil provides cleansing power, hardness and bubbly lather but too much can make a bar feel overly cleansing and stripping for a lot of people, which is why balance is so important.
Rice bran oil helps create a creamy, pleasant-feeling bar and works beautifully alongside olive oil. Plant butters contribute hardness and a luxurious, creamy quality to the finished soap. While castor oil helps support a creamy, stable lather.
Together, these ingredients create a bar designed not only to wash your skin, but to make cleansing feel like part of your skincare ritual.
The beauty of superfatting
Superfatting means formulating the recipe with slightly more oil than is theoretically needed for complete saponification.
The intention is to leave a small amount of unsaponified oil in the finished soap. It's one of the tools we use to influence the characteristics of the finished bar.
But too high of a superfat can lead to a soft bar that doesn’t last very long. As with the rest of the formulation, it's about finding the right balance between cleansing, lather, hardness and skin feel.
Cold-process soap takes time, and that's a good thing
One of the things that makes handmade soap so different is that we don't rush the process.
After our soap has been made, it isn't immediately ready for your shower.
It needs time to cure.
Over several weeks, water continues to evaporate from the bar, creating a harder, longer-lasting soap with a more developed lather.
This is one of the reasons a properly cured cold-process bar can feel so different in your hands and on your skin compared with a freshly made bar.
Naturally occurring glycerin
Traditional cold-process soap also creates glycerin naturally during saponification.
Glycerin is a humectant, meaning it attracts water to the skin and helps hold it in.
In traditional soapmaking, that naturally occurring glycerin remains in the finished bar.
It's one of the reasons we love the simplicity of traditional soapmaking. The process itself creates something valuable to the finished product.
Why we choose not to use palm oil
Palm oil is a popular ingredient with a long history in soapmaking.
It can create a hard, durable bar, but palm oil production has sadly also been associated with deforestation and habitat loss.
There are responsibly sourced and certified palm oils available, however the environmental conversation around palm oil is complex and there are just a few too many loop holes for our liking.
For us, the decision is simple. We've worked hard testing our formulas to deliver beautiful, hard and long-lasting soap bars using more sustainable plant oils and butters.
So we've chosen to leave palm oil out of all our formulations. It's another small way our ingredients reflect our values.
Healthy Soap for Healthy Skin
This is where our philosophy really begins.
We don't mean that a bar of soap can cure skin conditions or solve every skincare concern (because unless a product has specifically been tested as treatment for those conditions, those claims are actually illegal).
We mean something much simpler. Healthy-looking skin starts with treating it well.
It starts with cleansing without unnecessarily compromising how your skin feels.
It starts with choosing ingredients thoughtfully.
It starts with paying attention to the way your skin responds to the products you use every day.
And sometimes, improving your skincare routine isn't about adding another serum or treatment to fix the issue.
but about reconsidering the basics.
Handmade doesn't automatically mean healthy
We also don't believe that putting the word "handmade" on a label automatically makes a product better.
There are beautifully formulated commercial cleansers.
There are poorly formulated handmade soaps.
The words natural, botanical and handmade aren't guarantees. What matters is the formulation.
That's why we want you to look beyond the pretty packaging and understand what you're actually buying.
Because when you choose a soap based on its ingredients and how it's formulated, you're making a more informed choice for your skin.
But why does handmade soap cost more?
It's a fair question.
A supermarket bar can cost only a few dollars, while a handcrafted cold-process bar may cost considerably more.
But the products aren't necessarily being made in the same way.
Our soaps are made in small batches.
Ingredients are carefully measured and combined.
Every batch is poured, cut and finished by hand.
And then we wait weeks while the soap cures.
There are no enormous production lines producing thousands of identical bars.
There is simply a small maker, carefully selected ingredients and a lot of time.
You're not just paying for a bar of soap.
You're paying for the formulation, the ingredients, the process, the curing time and the care that goes into creating it.
It can change the way you think about cleansing
Perhaps the biggest transformation isn't something you'll see overnight in the mirror.
It's the way you experience your everyday routine.
Instead of grabbing whatever soap happens to be sitting beside the sink, you begin to think about what you're actually putting on your skin.
You notice how your skin feels after cleansing.
You notice whether your skin feels comfortable or tight.
You begin to appreciate the ingredients.
And suddenly, something as ordinary as washing your hands or stepping into the shower becomes part of your self-care ritual.
That's what Healthy Soap for Healthy Skin means to us.
Your skin deserves a better beginning
We often think of skincare as the products we apply after cleansing.
But your skincare routine begins much earlier, which is why we’ve worked so hard perfecting our formula. Check out our botanical soap range here and start your healthy skin journey.
