You know that feeling when your skin is tight and uncomfortable after washing, but somehow still looks a little shiny? Or when your moisturiser just doesn't seem to be doing anything, and no matter how much you layer on, your skin still doesn't feel quite right?
You might assume your skin is simply dry, but it could actually be dehydrated.
Dry and dehydrated skin can look really similar, but they aren't the same thing. Understanding which one you're dealing with can make a surprisingly big difference to the products you reach for.
To put it very simply, dry skin lacks oil, while dehydrated skin lacks water.
It’s actually a little more complicated than that, but that’s the main concept. Understanding the difference between them can help you make better choices about what your skin actually needs, rather than reaching for the richest product you can find and hoping for the best.
So let's break down the difference, how to recognise the signs, and what your skin may actually need.
First, what is the difference between dry and dehydrated skin?
The words "dry" and "dehydrated" are often used interchangeably in skincare, but they describe different aspects of the skin.
Dry skin is a skin type and generally refers to a lack of lipids (oils and fats) in the outer layer of the skin and changes to the skin barrier that can affect how well the skin retains water.
Dehydrated skin is a skin condition and refers to skin with reduced water content, particularly in the outermost layer of the skin.
The two are closely connected because the skin's ability to retain water depends partly on its barrier. The outermost layer of the skin contains natural water-binding substances as well as lipids (fats and oils) that help limit water loss. When these systems aren't functioning properly, the skin can become dry, dehydrated, or both.
So while "dry = oil" and "dehydrated = water" is a useful shorthand, real skin biology is a little more complicated.
And that's why the right approach isn't always as simple as adding more oil or more water.

What does dry skin look and feel like?
Dry skin can feel rough, tight or uncomfortable, and may appear flaky or dull.
You may notice:
- Rough or uneven texture
- Flaking or visible dry patches
- A tight feeling, particularly after cleansing
- Skin that feels less soft or supple
- Fine lines appearing more noticeable
- Increased sensitivity or discomfort
- Areas such as the hands, elbows, knees or heels becoming particularly dry
Dryness can be influenced by many things, including environmental conditions, frequent washing, age and changes to the skin barrier. The outermost layer of the skin plays an important role in keeping water in and protecting the skin from the environment.
It's also worth remembering that persistent or severe dryness can sometimes be associated with an underlying skin condition. If your skin is persistently itchy, inflamed, cracked or painful, it's worth speaking with a healthcare professional rather than assuming it's simply a skincare issue.
What does dehydrated skin look and feel like?
Dehydrated skin is about water content, rather than whether your skin produces a lot or a little oil.
You might notice:
- Skin feeling tight or less comfortable
- A dull or tired appearance
- Fine lines becoming more noticeable
- Skin feeling less plump or supple
- Makeup settling into fine lines or looking less smooth
- Skin feeling dry immediately after cleansing
There’s a lot of overlap between the two and that’s why it can sometimes be really difficult to distinguish between them.
And here's something that surprises a lot of people:
Oily skin can still be dehydrated.
Having oily skin and having well-hydrated skin are not the same thing.
Your skin's oil production and its water content are separate characteristics. So it's possible to have an oily or combination complexion while the outer layer of the skin has reduced water content.
This is one reason why trying to "dry out" oily skin isn't necessarily the answer. Supporting the skin barrier and maintaining appropriate hydration can be more helpful than simply trying to remove as much oil as possible.
Can you have dry AND dehydrated skin?
Absolutely.
In fact, this is where things can become confusing.
Your skin can have reduced oil/lipid content and reduced water content at the same time.
For example, skin that has a compromised barrier may lose water more readily while also becoming rough, dry and uncomfortable.
This is where TEWL, or transepidermal water loss, comes into the picture.
TEWL is simply the amount of water that passes through the skin and evaporates into the surrounding environment. It is one of the measurements researchers use when assessing skin barrier function.
Your skin naturally loses some water all the time which is completely normal. Problems occur when the skin's barrier isn't doing its job effectively enough to regulate that loss.
The outer layer of the skin contains lipids, natural moisturising factors and other structures that work together to maintain hydration and limit excessive water loss. So if your skin feels both rough and tight, it may not be a case of choosing between an oil and a hydrating product. Your skin may benefit from both.

So what does dry skin actually need?
If your skin is genuinely dry, one of the things it may benefit from is emollient and occlusive ingredients.
These work differently, but both can help improve the feel and function of dry skin.
Emollients
Emollients help soften and smooth the skin by filling in spaces between skin cells and improving the feel of the skin's surface.
This is a pretty broad category that many plant oils and butters fall into.
Occlusives
Occlusives help reduce water loss from the skin's surface by creating a physical barrier that slows evaporation. This is one reason richer products such as our Calendula Soothing Skin Balm can be particularly useful for very dry areas.
What Does Dehydrated Skin Need?
Dehydrated skin benefits from ingredients and formulations that help increase and maintain water in the outer layer of the skin.
One important group of ingredients here is humectants.
Humectants are water-attracting ingredients that can help increase the water content of the outer layer of the skin. Some of the best-known examples are glycerin and hyaluronic acid, which are both naturally present in the skin as part of its natural moisturising system. Research has shown that topical glycerin can improve skin hydration and support the skin barrier.
A few of our favourite humectants
We're particularly fond of glycerin, panthenol and betaine in formulations designed to support hydrated, comfortable skin.
Panthenol, also known as provitamin B5, has been studied for its moisturising and skin-barrier-supporting properties. Clinical research has found that topical panthenol can increase skin hydration and reduce TEWL, making it a useful ingredient when the goal is to support both hydration and the skin barrier.
Other ingredients can contribute to hydration too, and well-formulated moisturisers often combine humectants, emollients and occlusives rather than relying on one type of ingredient alone. This is important because hydrating the skin and keeping that hydration there are two related but different jobs. A humectant can help increase water in the outer layer of the skin, while emollients and occlusives can help soften the skin and reduce water loss. Together, these different functions can provide a more complete approach to moisturisation.
What about drinking more water?
This is one of those skincare claims that sounds obvious:
"If your skin is dehydrated, just drink more water."
But the research isn't quite that straightforward.
A systematic review examining fluid intake and skin hydration found that additional water intake may increase skin hydration, particularly in people who previously had lower water consumption. However, the researchers described the overall evidence as weak, and the relationship between increased water intake and measures such as TEWL was unclear.
So yes, staying adequately hydrated is important for your overall health. But we shouldn't claim that simply drinking more water will automatically resolve dehydrated skin.
What ingredients should you look for?
Rather than choosing products based solely on whether the label says "hydrating" or "moisturising", we think it’s helpful to understand what different ingredients actually do.
For hydration
Look for humectants, such as:
- Glycerin
- Hyaluronic acid
- Panthenol
- Urea
- Sodium PCA
- Betaine
These ingredients can help increase and maintain water in the outer layer of the skin. Different humectants work in slightly different ways and can have additional benefits, so they aren't simply interchangeable and you may notice a few of them used together.
For dry skin
Look for emollient ingredients, which help soften and smooth the skin. These can include:
- Plant oils, such as jojoba, rosehip, sunflower and sweet almond oil
- Plant butters, such as shea and mango butter
- Ceramides and other skin-identical lipids
- Fatty alcohols, such as cetyl alcohol and cetearyl alcohol
These ingredients can help improve the feel and appearance of dry skin by softening the skin's surface and supporting its barrier. Different emollients have different properties, so the overall formulation matters just as much as the individual ingredient.
For reducing water loss
Look for occlusive ingredients, which help form a protective layer over the skin and reduce the amount of water that evaporates from its surface.
Examples that you'll commonly encounter in skincare include:
- Beeswax
- Plant butters, such as shea butter and mango butter
- Lanolin
Some ingredients can contribute to more than one function. For example, plant butters can act as emollients while also providing some occlusive properties.
A good moisturising formula can contain a combination of humectants, emollients and occlusives, allowing it to support hydration, soften the skin and help reduce water loss.
And that's one reason why formulation matters just as much as the individual ingredient.
A skincare product isn't simply a collection of ingredients working independently. They're combined in specific proportions and structures to create the finished formulation, and that can influence everything from how the product performs to how it feels on your skin.
So when you're choosing skincare, don't feel like you need to find the perfect ingredient. Sometimes, the most effective approach is looking for a well-formulated combination of ingredients that each have a different job.

What If Your Skin Is Both Dry and Dehydrated?
This is where a simple, layered routine can be helpful.
If your skin is both lacking water and lacking the oils or lipids that help keep that water in, you may benefit from addressing both hydration and dryness rather than choosing one or the other.
You don't need a complicated collection of products, either. Think about the three main jobs:
1. Add or support hydration
Start with a product formulated with humectants that can help increase water in the outer layer of the skin such as a hydrating serum, toner, essence or a lightweight water-based moisturiser.
The important thing isn't whether a product is called a "serum", "toner" or "essence". It's what's actually in the formula.
2. Soften and condition
Next, consider products containing emollient ingredients such as oils, butters and other lipids. Depending on your skin and the area you're treating, this could include a facial oil or elixir, a richer moisturiser or body cream and body oils.
These products can help soften and smooth the skin while contributing to a more comfortable skin feel.
3. Help reduce water loss
Finally, you may want something that helps slow water loss from the skin's surface. This can come from an occlusive ingredient within a rich moisturiser, or a face or body balm.
You don't necessarily need a separate product for every step. Many well-formulated moisturisers contain a combination of humectants, emollients and occlusives, allowing one product to perform several of these functions, you just need to be aware of them so you know what to look for!

Remember, these are examples rather than rules. You don't need to follow a particular number of steps, and adding more products isn't necessarily better.
The best approach will depend on your skin, the formulation you're using, the area of the body you're treating and how your skin responds. Unfortunately, it comes down to trial and error to find what works best for you.
A simple way to think about it
If you're trying to work out what your skin might need, start here:
Your skin feels rough, flaky and lacking softness
Think: dryness.
Your skin may benefit from emollient and occlusive ingredients that soften the skin and help reduce water loss.
Your skin feels tight, dull or less plump (even if it may be oily)
Think: dehydration.
Your skin may benefit from hydration-supporting ingredients, particularly humectants, alongside appropriate moisturisation.
Your skin feels both rough AND tight
You may be dealing with both.
In that case, your routine may benefit from supporting hydration while also providing emollient and barrier-supportive care.
The most important thing? Listen to your skin.
There's no universal skincare routine that works perfectly for everyone.
Skin changes with the weather, age, environment, cleansing habits and many other factors. Even the same person's skin can feel very different from one season to another.
Rather than asking "Is my skin dry or dehydrated?" Sometimes the more useful question is "What is my skin asking for right now?"
Does it need more hydration? More nourishment? A little more protection? Or perhaps simply a gentler routine?
Understanding the difference between dryness and dehydration gives you a better starting point and helps you choose products based on what they actually do, rather than simply what the front of the label promises.
Because good skincare doesn't need to be complicated. It just needs to make sense for your skin.
